Borneo’s Ex-headhunters
The Iban of Sarawak were the most fearsome of Borneo’s headhunters. Now they have swapped lopping off human heads for tending chickens and sowing crops.
Traditions do not die easily and many an Iban longhouse still has a group of hand-me-down skulls suspended over the entrance to bring strength and prosperity.
ERIC PASQUIER treads carefully as he is welcomed by these friendly forest people keen to show off their ornate tattoos and fancy head-dresses.
